Our conscious mind is not in control

According to Erik Calonius, the human mind is bombarded with about 11 million pieces of information per second, based on the number of receptor cells of each sense organ and the nerves that go from these cells to our brains.

According to David Brooks, we can only consciously be aware of 40 of these.

Mental processes that are inaccessible to consciousness organize our thinking, shape our judgments, form our characters, and provide us with the skills we need in order to thrive.

Our conscious mind can influence and change our unconscious mind. But on a day-to-day, moment-to-moment level, it’s our unconscious mind that’s in control.
