Who are you going to be today?

David Whyte is a poet and philosopher who concerns himself with vocation, discovering who we are, and navigating the realm between the spiritual and the practical. I was introduced to him by Jerry Colonna. This past Saturday I attended a full-day workshop/lecture/recital with him in New York.

One thing that really stuck with me was the idea of waking up every day to the wonder of discovering ourselves anew. Who am I going to be today? You don’t have to choose to be the same old person you were when you went to bed last night. You can choose to be someone new. You can be curious and rediscover who you are.

In particular, you want to avoid jumping straight into your to-do list, because that to-do list was written by the person you were yesterday, not the person you are today.

So tomorrow, when you wake up, ask yourself: Who am I today? Who would I like to be today? What am I awakening to today?

Let me know what comes up for you.
