'I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well'

As a teacher, my primary asset is my own story, my own experience. Yet I still have this jante law programming against talking about myself. That’s why it was such a relief to come across this paragraph in the beginning of Thoreau’s Walden:

I should not talk so much about myself if there were anybody else whom I knew as well.
