The dying newspaper industry

Daily Exhaust:

The downfall of newspaper publishing is not something to shrug one’s shoulders at, like with Blockbuster falling apart. It is a genuine tragedy.

The newspaper industry dying is indeed a tragedy. We need serious reporting more than ever. But the newspapers that we have left don’t seem to be doing a whole lot of it.

But isn’t The Economist growing, thereby demonstrating that there’s definitely a population of people who are willing to pay for quality journalistic content?

I think the newspapers need to figure out their positioning. The old one clearly dosen’t work anymore. Trying to keep up with the news cycle is meaningless.

The value-add is serious journalism. Focus on that, and find the market that’s willing to pay for it.
