Less sleep means less tired

It’s happened before, but it still puzzles me every time. For a couple weeks, I’ve been feeling really tired. I’ve been making sure I’d get at least 8 hours of sleep, some nights even longer, but I still felt tired. Then after a night of just 5 hours of sleep, I felt great. Now after two more 5-6 hour nights, I still feel more well rested than I have for weeks.

I know it’s not unusual that too much sleep can make you tired, but it still throws me.

Have you experienced the same?

Yes - I believe its because you actually notice how tired you are when you start to catch up. I had the same experience, especially when my little son started to sleep well at night. I still wonder how we managed to get through those months :o) /n

You should check out the following article about sleep cycles. I sometimes sleep 4-5 hours and feel great. Other times when I rarely sleep 10 hours i feel horrible afterwards. The above article explains it a bit I think.

According to "this BBC story":http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1820996.stm, too much sleep can lead to a shorter life (what irony, first you sleep your life away, then you die sooner), but it doesn't say anything about being tired. I thought I'd seen something in one of my sleep books ("No more sleepless nights":amazon:0471149047, a pretty decent book), but I just checked, and what they talked about (p73) was lying in bed *not* sleeping being bad for your ability to sleep, not that sleeping for a long time makes you tired. The sleep cycle theory is interesting for sure.

Oh, yes, and the irony that I have the problem of too much sleep with a 3 month old baby -- but she's been sleeping through the night since she was 6 weeks :)
