Building great things

Jason Fried rants against maximization:

I get how it works. I just don’t care. I’m not interested in squeezing something so tight that I get every last drop. I don’t want, need, or care about every last drop. Those last drops usually don’t taste as good anyway. My thirst is usually well quenched far before that final drop.

The idea of shareholder value maximization is the dumbest idea the business world has seen in a long time. And making laws so the CEO can be held accountable for the same is insane.

Business didn’t used to be about maximizing profits or shareholder value. Like any other organization, a business is about solving one or more problems, and a business differs in that it wants to profit from doing so. That should be the foundation. A business must have a higher purpose other than simply extracting profits or shareholder value.
