Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I do

Eilee Garrett was one of the leading figures in the scientific study of paranormal phenomena in the last century. Here’s a quote about her from Extraordinary Knowing:

Near the end of her life, Eileen Garrett was asked whether she really believed in all the psychic phenomena she’d dedicated her life to exploring. She promptly replied, “Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I do. Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, I don’t. On Sunday, I don’t give a damn.”

I love it. It reminds me of the Coda in the Steve Jobs biography:

One sunny afternoon, when he wasn’t feeling well, Jobs sat in the garden behind his house and reflected on death. He talked about his experiences in India almost four decades earlier, his study of Buddhism, and his views on reincarnation and spiritual transcendence. “I’m about fifty-fifty on believing in God,” he said. “For most of my life, I’ve felt that there must be more to our existence than meets the eye.”

But then came his final words:

Before embarking, he’d looked at his sister Patty, then for a long time at his children, then at his life’s partner, Laurene, and then over their shoulders past them.

Steve’s final words were:

OH WOW. OH WOW. OH WOW.

Does that imply he saw something?

Does it imply that his uncertainty was finally resolved?

Who knows.
