What Taylor Swift Taught Me about Being Unique

I went to see Taylor Swift live in concert recently. It happened on a whim. Got tickets in the morning. And while we were waiting for her to go on stage, I had a huge realization that I wanted to share with you.

But first...

I've been following Taylor Swift for a while. I'm totally in awe of what she's created in her life. I find her music a little bland at times, but you simply cannot argue with her ability to create attention for herself and to curate a following. She's done an amazing job.

I saw a documentary about her a while back, The Journey to Fearless. The one moment that stood out the most for me was that, as a teenager, she and her mom would go from radio station to radio station to promote her music, and they'd bring home baked cookies. How awesome is that?

Greatest moment of the show for me was when Taylor's mom and a staff member came over to three teenage girls in the row right in front of us and gave them backstage passes to go meet Taylor after the concert. They were completely floored. They laughed, they cried, they danced around, they burst into tears again, they were just completely out of it for the longest time afterwards. So sweet.

Anyway, while waiting for Taylor to go on, I couldn't help thinking: Out of all seven billion people on earth right now, not a single one could take Taylor's place on that stage. Not one. No-one would be able to go up there and perform that show in exactly the way Taylor would. No-one would be able to go up there and be like her. Not one. out of seven bleeping billion.

To me, that's just incredible to think about.

And then realize, the same is true for you.

Who you are, what you're here to do, your unique essence, your unique personality, your story, your particular set of experiences. No-one even comes close. Out of seven billion and change, not a single person is going to be the same as you.

So think about that. Let it sink in. And really honor that uniqueness in you. And know that it is your birthright and your duty to go out there and play your part. To be you, all the way.

You're not here to hold back. You're here to play at full force.

Will you do that for me? For us? For you?

Lots of love, -Calvin
